How long should my garage door spring last?

Hello again from the Charlotte garage door repair doctors.  We’re often asked about the lifespan of garage door springs.  This question is particularly relevant right now with temperatures dropping – causing the springs to contract becoming more brittle – and our dispatch team reporting a spike in broken spring calls.

The lifespan of garage door springs can vary depending on several factors, including the type of spring, the quality of the springs, and – most importantly – how often the garage door is used.  In the industry we refer to each use as one cycle.

What is a garage door spring cycle?

A garage door spring cycle refers to the full opening and closing of a garage door. It represents one complete cycle of the garage door’s operation, from the door being fully closed to fully open and back to fully closed again.

So, what’s the lifespan of a garage door spring?

With post-COVID commutes back and kids seemingly pressing the garage door button too many times (at least in our house), how long should your springs last?  Recall, there are two types of garage springs:

Torsion Springs: These are the springs mounted above the garage door and are wound to store energy. Torsion springs are known for their durability and typically have a longer lifespan compared to extension springs. They can last anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 cycles, which roughly translates to 7 – 14 years if the door is cycled opened and closed twice a day. However, the actual lifespan can be shorter or longer depending on usage and maintenance.

Extension Springs: These are typically located on both sides of the door and stretch when the door is in the closed position. Extension springs tend to have a shorter lifespan compared to torsion springs.

Other factors that can affect the lifespan of garage door springs include environmental conditions (extreme temperatures and humidity), exposure to the elements (damp environment and rust), maintenance (regular lubrication and inspections), and the quality of the springs themselves.

It’s important to keep in mind that garage door springs are under a lot of tension and can be dangerous to work with. If you suspect that your garage door springs are worn out or need replacement, give us a call for a proper assessment and replacement to ensure safety and functionality. Attempting to replace garage door springs yourself can be hazardous and is not recommended unless you have the necessary expertise and equipment.
